Performance Budgets for Business Websites

"Our site should be fast" isn't a strategy.

A performance budget is. It's a constraint on your codebase size, image sizes, and request counts that keeps your site performant as it grows.

**How to set one:** 1. Pick representative devices and network conditions for your audience 2. Set measurable targets using Core Web Vitals: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) 3. Work backwards from those targets to define practical budgets for JavaScript, CSS, images, and fonts 4. Track those budgets in your delivery workflow and investigate meaningful regressions

**Why this matters for SEO:** Google recommends good Core Web Vitals for user experience and search, while noting that they are only part of its ranking systems. Performance improvements do not guarantee a specific ranking or conversion lift; measure the effect for your own audience and product.

Performance isn't a feature to add later. It's a structural choice you make from day one.

Set a budget based on your users and product, measure it in the field, and revise it as the experience and audience change.
