How to Scope an MVP Without Slowing Delivery

Scope creep kills MVPs. But too little scope leaves you with a toy instead of a testable product.

One useful way to balance these risks is:

• **The Must/Should/Could model**
• Must: Core value prop that users would pay for
• Should: Features that make the experience feel complete
• Could: Nice-to-haves that don't block launch

It is easy to over-scope an MVP and delay learning. Ship the Must features and the most valuable Should features, then let real usage guide what comes next.

**Plan in slices, not fixed estimates** Break the work into backend, frontend, and testing milestones, then estimate each against your team's capacity, integrations, and risk. There is no universal timeline; treat early estimates as hypotheses and revisit them as discovery reduces uncertainty.

This makes trade-offs visible and helps prevent perfectionism without promising a delivery date before the unknowns are understood.

**Measure from day one** Don't wait for "launch" to start collecting data. Instrument your MVP to understand what users actually do, not what you assumed they'd do.

The goal is not simply to minimize the MVP; it is to focus it on a core user problem. Delivery speed depends on scope, team capacity, and the risks discovered along the way.
